1st ECOP conference and Training school in Bodrum, Turkey, 4 – 8 May 2026

Thanks to the hard work of many of the REMINDNET participants, we were able to organise the 1st European Conference On Post-mining issues.

This ECOP conference will be held regularly every two years in a different European city. The first took place from 4th to 6th May in Bodrum, Turkey.

The Training School for young students and scientists was held in parallel with the conference.

The one-week training school, which took place from 4 to 8 May, focused on the socio-economic aspects and financing of post-mining. The programme included expert lectures, workshops, presentations by young researchers, a technical field trip and discussions with international experts in post-mining issues, GIS and sustainable development.

As part of the Training School program, students also participated in a special full-day session for Young Researchers during the first year of the ECOP – European Conference On Post-mining Issues.

The extraction of minerals and metals from the earth crust is as old as human mankind. The management of mine closure and post-closure is getting more and more attention because in Europe as well as worldwide many regions are affected by environmental residues such as tailings, waste dumps, subsidences, contaminated water which is the result of unsatisfactory environmental performance of the mining industry in the past.
